ban plastic water bottles

students ban the bottle

It is now widely understood that single-use bottled water is bad for the environment and bad for your wallet. Here are a few sobering statistics that highlight this:

– The production of water bottles uses 17 million barrels of oil a year, and it takes three times the water to make the bottle
as it does to fill it.

– Of the 30 billion plastic water bottles sold in the United States in 2005, only 12 percent were recycled.

– Over $100 billion is spent on bottled water a year globally.

Many accuse the bottled water industry of manufacturing demand by declaring a war on tap water. Ironically, almost half (47.8%) of bottled water is derived from tap water. Is it a coincidence that Evian spelled backwards is naïve? Tap water is EPA regulated and undergoes strict quality testing. Whereas bottled water is subject to far less testing and reporting requirements.

In the past, colleges and universities have consumed a lot of bottled water. Now, they are at the forefront of taking a stand against bottled water waste and expense by installing water bottle filling stations and banning the sale of bottled water on campuses. This bottled water ban spans more than just a few major universities across the nation.

One of our local State universities – University of Vermont – was among the first to institute an initiative to ban plastic water bottles. Students at UVM are now thankful to have Bottle Bright to clean their reusable water bottles.

Here is a list compiled by Ban the Bottle of schools that have banned bottled water, or at least the sale of it. Way to go students!
